Fieldnotes

For my inkblot on Day 3, I was inspired by the painting below done by Ray Eames. I can’t find much about it online other than it was a gift to Charles. On the reverse side, she wrote, “To Hoffman with Love from Buddha.”

I became familiar with the painting after seeing it in the film, ‘Eames: The Architect and Painter’. I love this painting and it is now hanging above my desk. The blot didn’t turn out exactly as I was hoping for - it’s quite dark and the pink turned orange, so I might continue to try and replicate it.

I’m also thinking of evolving my blot practice and instead of random drops of paint, maybe I will paint an actual picture then fold the sides onto each other.

My Interpretation

I see two pandas — the thickness of the paint really creates a nice texture for the “fur”. That said, I should also mention that my Dad shared that he saw two pandas before I had a chance to decide on my interpretation, so I could be biased.

I also see a set of lungs towards the top of the frame.
